Second ground
2026

Live performance The Barttlet School of Architecture, UCL. London, UK.

Second Ground is a short essay film that explores Russian Dock Woodland in London as a hybrid landscape shaped by human interventions. This natural-artificial landscape was built on the ruins of the former Surrey Commercial Docks. Few places in London have undergone as many transformations as the Rotherhithe peninsula. Its radical shift from port infrastructure to landscape leaves traces of what once existed within a new use. In the present, new forms of life have taken over this historical layer (intentionally shaped by humans), and although it appears to be an ordinary park, this project explores how living systems and industrial traces coexist.

The title refers to the idea of a rewritten terrain, proposing this space as a new entity in which the natural layer is already intertwined with its historical strata. The idea of returning to a pure or original layer is not relevant here; instead, the project focuses on the collaborative conditions between the different species inhabiting this place. Second Ground reflects on how human-made natural spaces can also be imagined and constructed as shared ecologies.

The film was developed through multiple visits, walks, photographic records, and sound recordings. Through repeated engagement with the site, various patterns of behaviour and changes in its forms of life became visible. The final work presents a collaborative reading between the human observer and the natural environment, as a way of representing the coexistence already present within the site. This sonic composition is complemented by images of ponds, vegetation, pathways, domestic spaces, and vestiges of the docks. The visual language is guided more by atmosphere than by explanation.
